The Ancient Art of the Mudras and the Benefits of Using Them in Deep Meditation

The ancient art of the Mudras is composed of several symbolic and ritualistic gestures and movements. It is widely practiced by believers of Hinduism and Buddhism. All those who believe in it attest the power of healing and relaxation. Majority of the routines in this art are concentrated on the movement of the hands and fingers. The main function of the Mudras is spiritual connection and meditation. In fact, it is a very effective deep meditation technique that has been practiced and embraced by one of the largest cultural groups in the history of the world.

In the practice of meditating, Mudras are utilized with pranayama or breathing exercises. With a certain stance or position called Vajrasana, the person doing it will be able to meditate deeply. Unlike most meditation techniques where you are required to lay still and restrict movement, it encourages gestures to attain meditative healing.

The main benefit of the art is producing curative feelings using gestures. It can provide a person mind, body, and spiritual balance. Although there is no valid or direct scientific evidence, those who practice it attest to the curative effect. The practice of several Mudras has in fact gained popular attention to many people who are seeking to heal themselves and their souls through deep meditation.

Generally speaking, Mudras are classified into four different types. The first is called Hasta Mudras. It deals with hand postures. Second is Nritya Shastra, or those that involve head and face postures. Third is Bandhas or body locks. Finally, there are the body postures called Yoga Mudras.

When it comes to the benefits and positive effects of this ancient art, the concept of healing revolves around the balancing of the five elements of the body called Pancha Mahabootas. It is composed of the air, water, fire, ether, and earth. The idea is if there is no balance, people start to experience pain and suffer from disease. The end goal of the art of the Mudras is to let the person practicing it experience a total change and development in his life, especially those that deal with his health and body.

Essential Leonard Cohen

Essential Leonard Cohen

$7.90

This two-disc retrospective traces the Canadian bard’s musical maturity from poet and novelist who sang a little to multidimensional artist whose oracular vocals and increasingly rich arrangements are every bit as compelling as his verse. Even when Cohen came to prominence through the 1960s songcraft of “Suzanne” and “Bird on a Wire,” the “folksinger” tag never really fit. Later highlights ranging…

Perhaps the stars were right, or perhaps his American company, flush from the unexpected success of Murphy’s former bandmates in Love and Rockets, just decided to give Murphy a well-deserved publicity push. Whatever it was, with Deep Murphy scored an honest to goodness American radio/MTV hit thanks to the tender, lively “Cuts You Up,” a love song with solid energy and an inspired vocal. It was a perfect calling card for the album as a whole, with Murphy in excelsis throughout and his Hundred Men providing everything from the lush, acoustic guitar wash of “Marlene Dietrich’s Favorite Poem” to the stripped-down Arabic-tinged funk/hip-hop punch of the commanding “Roll Call.” Through it all, Murphy simply sounds like he’s having the time of his life, singing both for the sheer joy of it and for the dramatic power of his commanding voice. He’s even comfortable enough to do an open rewrite of Bauhaus’ “In the Flat Field,” renamed “The Line Between the Devil’s Teeth”; it has almost the same verse structure, definitely some of the same lyrics, but still, it’s something he could have only done in his solo days. Quite why nothing else on the album connected with the public as strongly as “Cuts You Up” is a mystery; its follow-up single, “A Strange Kind of Love,” was a striking love song, with acoustic guitar and plaintive Statham keyboards supporting one of Murphy’s strongest lyrics and performances. Regardless, Deep showed Murphy balancing mass appeal and his own distinct art with perfection. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Gill Tingay – Harp; Eddie Branch – Bass; Jim Williams – Guitar; Paul Statham – Keyboards, Guitar; Peter Bonas – Guitar; Peter Murphy – Vocals; Simon Rogers – Guitar (Acoustic); Terl Bryant – Percussion, Drums
